What does your current role involve?
I’m heavily involved in the capitalisation of schemes to ensure the Severn Trent Water’s asset base is accurate and complete. My role also involves the approval and release of capital budgets to project managers and ensuring the accuracy of the Infrastructure Renewals Expenditure (IRE) reported numbers. All parts of my role require engagement with the rest of the finance and the wider business
How did you start out at Severn Trent? What’s your career path been?
I started out as a temp within the Reconciliation Controls team, before moving to a permanent role at STW. I’ve been in my current role for about two years. Alongside working, I’m studying to be a qualified CIMA accountant, which Severn Trent is supporting me in. So obviously it’s great to feel that the company is investing in you. I’m also about to start a new role, as a Project Associate. This will involve looking after capital budgets and releasing budgets to project managers. It’s a different side of finance and means dealing with much higher values of money.
How has working at Severn Trent met or challenged your expectations?
I was surprised at how much change goes on. When I first moved here, the business was in the middle of a restructure and now there’s another one underway. So it’s exciting. It’s not at all an old-fashioned organisation. They’ve invested in a new building that will allow very modern working – and I’m really looking forward to being part of that.
What do you like the most about Severn Trent?
Everyone is incredibly friendly. I like to work hard in a nice atmosphere – and it’s very sociable here. We go out for people’s birthdays and often have meals together at lunchtime. I also like the flexibility. I sometimes work over my core hours during the month when it’s busy, but I can use the flexible working hours manage my work life balance. That makes quite a difference.
What have you found most enjoyable?
I really enjoy the raft racing at Carsington reservoir every September. We get dressed up, look a bit silly, get wet and race around the course on a raft. It’s all to raise money for Water Aid. Last year we reached over £1,000.
What are you most looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to becoming a qualified accountant this year. This will give me great scope for further developing my career.
