Meet our people

Nicholas Corker

Treasury Manager, Finance

"I got to travel around bits of America as we've got operations over there. I had a week around New Orleans, down the Mississippi Delta, visiting water works. That was a fantastic experience."

What does your current role involve?

The key responsibility of the team is ensuring we have the money available to spend on our major capital programme.  I work closely with the Group Treasurer and Finance Director to identify our financing requirements and to develop plans to meet these needs. I also look after the reporting for the team. That includes a range of management and statutory reports, as well as the reports that keep the executive committee informed.

How did you start out at Severn Trent? What’s your career path been?

I joined about seven years ago in Internal Audit after working for a big accountancy firm. I spent three years there, gaining experience and handling different projects, before moving to the Treasury team. This is a very specialist area, so I completed my Treasury AMCT exams to become fully qualified. I really appreciated the funding and support the business has provided.

IHow has working at Severn Trent met or challenged your expectations?

Severn Trent was attractive because I wanted to move into corporate business, and Internal Audit seemed a great route in.  And that certainly proved to be the case. I have really appreciated the opportunities available to me at Severn Trent to develop my career and to move into a different and exciting parts of the business like Treasury.

What do you like the most about Severn Trent?

I really like the people I work with. I’m part of a small team and there’s a very good atmosphere – we get on well together. I also get to work with people from different areas of finance; again, I enjoy liaising with them and developing things for the common good of the company.

What have you found most enjoyable?

When I was in Internal Audit, part of my job involved going out to visit the operations and individual sites. This meant I got to travel around bits of America as we’ve got operations over there. I had a week around New Orleans, down the Mississippi Delta, visiting water works. That was a fantastic experience. It was hard work, but I had the chance to spend the weekend exploring the area.

Since moving to Treasury I have enjoyed being involved in major projects which are really important in shaping our business.  This has included negotiating a new £500m bank facility and issuing a £250m bond.  It’s been great to be able to contribute to these transactions and to feel that your work really does make a difference.

What are you most looking forward to?

Over this next year I’m looking forward to playing an active role in a number of new projects to raise further finances for our business.
