We’re the team that ensures Severn Trent Water customers receive the very best service at all times. Some of our people work in contact centres, involved in things like answering queries, handling payments and issuing bills. We also have teams who work “out in the field”, visiting residential and business customers to carry out activities like installing meters and taking readings.
It seems like the simplest, most natural thing in the world: you turn the tap and out comes high-quality drinking water. But you’d probably be amazed to discover what goes into making this possible. Our Water Supply team does all the technical things behind the scenes that ensure our customers have constant access to water of the right quality. They also lead the efficiency initiatives that promote responsible use of this precious resource.
Delivering high-quality drinking water to all eight million of our customers is only half the story at Severn Trent Water. Just as important is the job of taking the waste water away – and making sure it can be returned safely to the environment. That’s what our sewage treatment team focuses on. We operate and maintain the infrastructure that means we can handle more than two billion litres of wastewater every single day.
Our engineering team makes a huge impact on our success as a business, the environment and our customers. By reducing leakage, we increase water efficiency and lower our environmental impact. And our ongoing capital works programme includes some of the region’s biggest and most important projects – everything from improving flood protection on our sites to investing in new wastewater treatment facilities and drinking-water pipelines.
We design, develop, deliver and support the different IT services that enable colleagues to do their jobs efficiently at more than 100 locations. As well as dealing with the kind of technologies you’d find in any large-scale modern organisation, we manage the specialist systems that are used to monitor and control the treatment and distribution of water and wastewater.
Severn Trent Water is a big business, with a turnover in 2008/2009 of more than £1.3 billion. Our Finance team is responsible for tracking and controlling our revenues and expenditures – and also for ensuring we follow best practice in order, ultimately, to deliver best value for our customer.
For every £2 we make in profit, we invest around £3 back into water and sewerage assets. Making sure that this spending is carried out in the very best way is the job of our Purchasing professionals. They manage relationships across our supply chain, to eliminate waste, reduce risk and achieve real value for money.
There are more than 5,500 people working in the many different areas of Severn Trent Water’s business. HR’s role is to make sure that each and every individual on the team has the support that will help them reach their full potential. Our work is also crucial to ensuring the business has the talent it needs to continuously improve performance and achieve its strategic objectives.
We manage a 3,000-strong fleet of vehicles ranging from small cars through to 44-tonne tankers. Our role is to make sure they’re all purchased and disposed of as well as possible. We also have our very own maintenance workshop capable of keeping everything running smoothly, whether it’s a tractor or a truck.
This key area of our business includes experts from a range of disciplines, including Legal, Company Secretariat, Risk, Insurance, Compliance and Security & Risk. Although we bring together people from a variety of backgrounds, we share a common goal: to manage and reduce the legal and regulatory risks that are inherent in our business.
This is the team that ensures we develop and deliver a robust, coherent long term strategy and business plan, all within our regulatory compliance framework. We’re responsible for delivering high-quality communications that support these activities and the wider organisation.
Our Internal Audit team works closely with business leaders, providing crucial assurance that the organisation is delivering the best possible service to our stakeholders. Specific activities in this area include: maintaining the corporate assurance map; preparing a risk-based audit plan; leading on anti-fraud initiatives; and encouraging a culture of risk and control.
